This file contains the minimum information you need to know about the Adobe PostScript® printer driver (AdobePS) 8.6 before installing it on your system. The Install procedure provides another Read Me file that contains detailed software notes about the product that you can read later.
New Features in AdobePS 8.6
AdobePS 8.6 provides the following new features:
- Collate
The Collate feature lets you print multiple collated copies of a document, as opposed to multiple groups of the same page.
- Reverse Order
The Reverse Order feature lets you control the order in which document pages are printed for a particular print job. This feature prints the document beginning with the last page.
- Poster
The Poster feature lets you enlarge pages to poster size and print them out on multiple sheets of paper which can be trimmed and taped together to create a poster.
- Manual Duplex
The Manual Duplex feature lets you print your document double sided by splitting the print job into two segments and prompting you to reload the printed pages from the first segment before printing the second segment on the other side.
- Booklet
The Booklet feature lets you create brochure-like printouts from your standard word-processing applications. A number of booklet sizes and shapes are possible, depending on how the output pages are oriented and folded.
System Requirements
AdobePS requires the following hardware and software:
- An Apple Power Macintosh computer running System 7.6.1 or later (AdobePS 8.6 does not run on the Macintosh 68K computers.)
- 4 MB or more of available memory
- 2.1 MB of available hard disk space
- Space as needed for PostScript Printer Description (PPD) files
- Apple ColorSync 2.0.1, if using the AdobePS ColorSync features (AdobePS does not support ColorSync 1.x.)
NOTE: AdobePS is not compatible with Apple QuickDraw GX.
Installing AdobePS 8.6
To install AdobePS 8.6:
1. Ensure your Macintosh is running System 7.6.1 or later.
2. If you are installing AdobePS acquired from a Web site proceed to step 4.
3. Insert the Installation diskette or CD-ROM into the appropriate drive.
4. Double-click the AdobePS Installer icon.
5. In the Installer, click the "Continue" button on the flash screen. When the license agreement dialog appears, read the document carefully and determine the action. If you agree with the license agreement and continue the installation process, click the "Accept" button. If you "Decline" accepting the license agreement, the Installer will terminate without installing any items.
6. Select the Easy Install.
The Easy Install option installs AdobePS, PrintingLib, Adobe Printing Library, AdobePS Read Me file, AdobePS License Agreement file, and a folder called Printer Descriptions with AdobePS driver extensions (DXTNs) called Custom Page, Virtual Printer, and Watermark. There are no printer description files installed in this folder by the Easy Install option. AdobePS uses a PPD file to determine the available features for each printer. PPD files contain information on each printer's available memory and features (e.g., paper size, ROM-resident fonts). Printer manufacturers develop and distribute PPD files for their printers and usually include the appropriate PPD file on a disk with the printer. If your printer did not come with a PPD file and the appropriate PPD file is not included with AdobePS, contact your printer manufacturer for one. Adobe also distributes many PPD files as a courtesy to printer manufacturers, so you can also check Adobe's World Wide Web site (http://www.adobe.com).
Using the Easy Install option requires maximum 2.1 MB of available disk space to install AdobePS components and documentation. (If you obtained AdobePS software from the manufacturer of your printer, there may be additional files.) PPD files are stored in the Printer Descriptions folder in the Extensions folder in the System Folder.
Installing this version of AdobePS will overwrite any previous version of AdobePS, but will not affect other printer drivers (e.g., LaserWriter, FaxPrinter, PSPrinter).
